Be a Poker Champion by Playing in Free Tournaments

Entering a poker tournament without any strategy, game plan, or skill can be disastrous. It's like entering a lion's den with only a toothpick for help. But if you can survive in a lion's den with only a toothpick, I suggest you no longer read this article.

The most basic strategy a person can learn and master are the pot odds and to have a "positive expectation".

A positive expectation simply means that the odds favor you winning more than you're wagering. A good example is the coin toss. Tossing the coin will give you a 50/50 chance of having either a head or a tail. When the coin is tossed enough times, the head or the tail will appear the same number of times.

Pot odds are the odds given by the pot for wagering a bet. For example the pot is $50 and it would cost you $10 to call. The odds will be 5:1. This is because if you win $50 you only wagered $10.

Pot odds are important to understand because they are relevant to you hands odds. For example you are holding a pair of 5's. Then the flop is 8, Q, 2 of different suits. There are also 9 players at the table. There is a possibility that one of the other 9 players holds an 8 or a Queen. This will make your pair of 5's weak. There are 2 more 5's out of the 47 that you can't see because they might be with another player or at the deck.

The odds of pulling a 5 on the river will be 2:47 or 4.2%. The chance of the 5 coming out on the river is 2:46 will be 4.3%. Add them both and the result will be 8.5%. This will equal to 1:11.6 chance to pull out the 3rd 5. It's best to flop when you have this hand since the pot odds is only 5:1 anyway.

It is impossible to go to a real casino room and bring a calculator with you to compute all these pot odds. This is the where free poker tournaments come in. One can learn and master these pot odds by playing free poker tournaments.

There is a software that is called a poker odds calculator. By playing at a free poker tournament with a poker odds calculator you may be able to retain the odds in your mind on the long run.

A poker odds calculator will compute the prospective hands that you and your opponents may draw at any point in the free poker tournament. It also displays all the possible hands you and your opponents could draw. It also teaches you what the odds of making that hand are.

That's why it would be great to practice and master pot odds with a poker odds calculator at free poker tournaments. It may take a long time to master and move on to real money poker tournaments, but at least you won't be entering the lion's den with only a toothpick.
